Susan Tsu

Designer Biography

Susan Tsu is honored to be on the USA curatorial team for Costume Design at the Turn of the Century. Tsu, Laura Crow, and Alexandra Bonds have collaborated many times as curators for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space as well as for the World Costume Festival- Vigan, Phillipines. Tsu has designed at the major LORT theatres in the USA. Notable productions include the award-winning hit musical Godspell- Broadway, national and international tours, The Joy Luck Club- a first time collaboration between Chinese and American companies- Long Wharf Theatre/Shanghai People's Art Theatre, China and Pacific Rim tours, and The Balcony- Bolshoi Theatre- part of the US-Soviet Cultural Exchange. Tsu's designs are represented in numerous books and publications, and she has won many awards. During a 6-year term on the Board of Directors for Theatre Communications Group she was on the task force that reconfigured American Theatre Magazine and was a strong advocate for the Free Night of Theatre initiative across America now reaching over 600 cities. Tsu co-curated the National and Student exhibits for the 2007 Prague Quadrennial, and was the Artistic Director for USITT/USA/PQ 2011. From the Edge, the USA/PQ11 exhibit, also toured to La Mama La Galleria in NYC, Penn State University Theatre, the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon, and the University of North Carolina-Asheville Department of Drama. Internationally, From the Edge has toured to the Bakhrushin Museum in Moscow- a first time exhibition of American design shown in the Russian Federation. Tsu's own designs have been shown in a major exhibit at Lincoln Center called: "Curtain Call: Celebrating A Century of Women Designing for Live Performance," and "From Sondheim to Shakespeare" at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas as well as in the 2003 Prague Quadrennial. Recent designs include Romeo and Juliet- Oregon Shakespeare Festival, As You Like It- Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Pantagleize- Quantum Theatre and Outside Mullingar- City Theatre. Tsu is professor of Costume Design at Carnegie Mellon University.
