Designer Biography
Ryszard Kaja, born 1962 in Poznan, Poland is a painter, graphic designer, and stage and costume designer. Kaja graduated from the Art Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan in 1984, debuting as a stage designer in 1989 at the Teatr Wielki in Lodz for all the settings of Verdi's Ernani. Kaja has since completed around 200 stage projects at the top theaters in Poland and abroad. Working mostly in opera and ballet, his work has brought him to, among other locations, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, and Egypt. Between1994-2000, Kaja was the main stage designer for Teatr Wielki in Lodz. In 1995, he was the stage designer for operas and operettas in Szczecinie, Poland. During 1995-2002 he was the stage designer for Teatr Wielki in Poznan. From around 2002, Kaja's main passion has been poster art. With his designs, including costuming, graphics, monotypes, poster, and stage design, Kaja creates his own very individual theatre.
