Designer Biography
Dr. Sofia Pantouvaki is Professor of Costume Design for Theatre and Film at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, Aalto University, Finland. She has studied Scenography (MA and PhD) at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, University of the Arts London, and specialised in design for opera and ballet at La Scala, Milan. A freelance designer for theatre, opera, contemporary dance and ballet since 1994, her personal design credits include over 70 productions in major venues in Greece, Italy, UK, Cyprus and Finland: Greek National Opera, State Theatre of Northern Greece, Athens Festival - Herod Atticus Odeon, Greek Municipal and Regional theatres, independent dance and theatre groups. She has collaborated with Megaron-Athens Concert Hall, Cairo Opera House, Athens and Epidaurus Festivals and La Scala. She was awarded for Best Production Design and Best Costumes at the Short Film International Festival of the city of Drama (2005); she has also curated and designed frequent exhibitions of scenography and costume collections. She is a member of the Global Editorial Board of
Catwalk: The Journal of Fashion, Beauty and Style
and member of the International Advisory Board of
Scene
. Also, a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Costume Society, an active member of the OISTAT Costume Design Group and of the ICOM Costume Committee. She is Project Leader for the Global conferences

(Intellect, 2016). Developing her research work, Sofia was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Costume Design funded by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (2010-2011). She has taught in Greece (Athens TEI and University of Peloponnese) and has been a guest lecturer at several European universities. She is co-author of
History of Dress - The Western World and Greece
(2010), editor of
Yannis Metsis - Athens Experimental Ballet
(2011) and co-editor of
Presence and Absence: The Performing Body
(2014). She has lectured and published internationally. She was the Costume Design Curator at World Stage Design 2013 (International Selection Panel) and Associate Curator of
Costume in Action
(WSD 2013). Her recent research includes theoretical insights and processes in performance costume design, fashion and costume curation, the potential of new materials and embodied technologies in costume practice, and clothing in the concentration camps of the Second World War. At Aalto University, Sofia founded and leads
Costume in Focus
, the first research group on performance costume.
